Structural Steel Viaduct retrofit in the heart of San Francisco.
As part of the City of San Francisco’s bridge retrofit programs, the Bayshore projects were the large-scale structural steel retrofits leading up to the West Approach Retrofit.
Bayshore III was the retrofit of the existing steel viaduct from 16th St. to Brannan St. The scope of work entailed the installation of new seismic knee braces, catcher beams, concrete pedestal retrofits, reinforced concrete buttresses, structural steel x-bracing and footing widenings.
Specialized testing included row-capacity of slip-critical and non slip-critical bolts, DTI washers checking with Skidmore, structural welding per AWS D1.1. Sunny Jhutti’s role on this project was the Assistant Structure’s Representative for Caltrans.
Value Added to the Client
The entire retrofit was performed while keeping traffic moving on the heavily-used Hwy 101 through San Francisco. Work was completed in phases to minimize impact to public parking lots that were located under the Bayshore Viaduct. This project was completed on time and within budget.
