Complex Adaptive Re-use of an historic brick residence in Presidio Heights converted to classrooms
Designed a three story tower bent shoring system to support the upper floor of the existing Presidio Hill School while the basement was being underpinned and the remainder of the building was being remodeled.
This project was deflection sensitive as the exterior was all brick. Also designed the elevation pit soldier pile shoring.
The adaptive re-use of this historic masonry residence in Presidio Heights and conversion to classrooms and offices for Presidio Hill School involved seismically strengthening the structure, preserving all historic elements of the building, while bringing into compliance for its future use. The temporary shoring aspects of the work had not been full thought out prior to construction and the complex shoring had to be reviewed and approved by the City of San Francisco Building Department.
Value Added to the Client
The tower bent shoring solution which is akin to scaffolding and allow for ease of construction for the seismic retrofit work. In addition the use of a soldier pile shoring was utilized along the property line ensured the adjacent property was protected during the excavation of the elevator pit.
