Bridge Replacement in the Sacramento Delta
Sunny was involved in the technical submittal review and assisted with CCO’s and NOPC’s for the Orwood Road Bridge Replacement project for Contra Costa County. Sunny also performed QA Oversight on the field inspector provided by Substrate.
The County project involved a 210ft long bridge replacement over the Sacramento Delta near Orwood Resort. The bridge was constructed in stages and involved driving piles for an access trestle, which allowed for drilling of the 6’0” diameter CIDH piles which were part of the bridge substructures. The superstructure consisted Precast Pre-stressed Slab Units, which were then cast over with a Concrete Deck. Other aspects of this project included retaining walls on driven piles, concrete barriers, approach slabs and HMA paving. Another critical part of the project was to ensure no concrete or debris entered the Delta, SWPPP compliance, and Biological Monitoring.
This project required significant coordination with East Bay Mud Aqueduct facility, Santa Fe Pacific and Kinder Morgan Pipelines.
This project won the 2018 APWA Project of the Year Award in the $5-$25 million dollar category. The project value was $8.7 Million dollars.
Value Added to the Client
This project involved a trestle design maintained a navigable watercraft access during construction. It also utilized a bubble curtain during pile driving operations to ensure that aquatic life was not killed in Werner Dredger’s Cut. This project was able to meet its objective of replacing the existing structurally deficient bridge with a new, wider, higher, bridge built to current safety standards with a separated Class‐1 bike lane.
