Retail/Industrial – Roof Evaluation & Truss Retrofit

This commercial project was a large-scale reconnaissance and truss retrofit of a rare circa 1950’s saw tooth roof structure to enable the existing roof to handle the existing force applied.

We were brought in to evaluate why the existing wood-framed trusses that support the existing saw-tooth roof structure on 435 Du Bois were rapidly failing and being damaged on a monthly basis. The cause was found that subsequent re-roofing and seasonal ponding of water was apparently causing this failure.

The solution was to re-roof with a lighter weight material and to repair the damaged trusses with high-strength tie-rods.

Value Added to the Client

As part of the reconnaissance, we were able to isolate the cause of the failures to certain section of the saw-tooth structure and repaired those trusses.

We further reduced the overall dead load on the roof by using more lightweight materials. We saved the client hundreds of thousands of dollar that would have resulted as an entire roof replacement would have been merited if not for the investigative work.
